Velawoods : Learn English

Official Website

Velawoods is an interactive learning game devised with and forĀ Cambridge University Press and Learn Direct UK, in which the player is immersed into a small english town where the user interacts with its friendly inhabitants via speech analysis techniques and learns English through a plethora of in-game activities. At the end of each successfully completed course, the player is awarded an officially certified Cambridge diploma, making this software fit for students as well as for multi-cultural organisations willing to adopt new technologies. The game was developed by Route 1 Games in Sheffield, UK, and has been released in the first quarter of 2015 on Android, iOS and Windows – since then, it has helped thousands of people learn a new language in an interactive and engaging way.

As a Core Unity Developer in a small but dynamic team, I assisted through the concept phase to its full release, the development time of almost two years having brought numerous responsibilities, some of which were:

  • Developing and maintaining Velawood’s timeline-based dialogue system and its user feedback
  • Implementing the speech analysis interpretation software, in close collaboration with Carnegie Speech, USA
  • The main menu and the player’s in-game profile features
  • A large number of in-game activities and gameplay mechanics
  • Ensuring a smooth collaboration between the developers and the artists, acting as a technical artist at times
  • Stable builds following the game’s release, with over 20.000 active users providing feedback during the continuous development

I left Route 1 Games after Velawood’s release and took on a journey through Europe, back home, waving the awesome city of Sheffield farewell.
